Build Computer Skills for Work, School, and Everyday Life

Tec Centro Berks’ Digital Literacy program helps adult learners build the technology skills needed for daily life, education, and employment. Students receive hands-on instruction in basic computer use, internet navigation, email, operating system basics, Microsoft Office tools, Google Workspace, online safety, and workplace technology.

This program is designed for beginners and adults who want to become more confident using computers, completing online forms, applying for jobs, communicating by email, and using technology in the workplace.

Students Will Learn:

Level 1: Foundational Digital Skills

Computer Basics

Learn how to use a computer, keyboard, mouse, touchpad, files, folders, and basic settings.

Internet Basics

Practice using websites, searching online, completing forms, and understanding safe internet habits.

Email Basics

Learn how to create, send, read, organize, and manage email, including attachments and basic email etiquette.

Operating System Basics

Build confidence navigating common computer systems, managing files, using apps, and completing everyday tasks.

Windows 10 and Windows 11

Learn navigation, settings, file management, and basic tools used in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

MacOS Basics

Gain exposure to Apple computer basics, including navigation, files, apps, and common Mac features.

Level 2: Essential Software Skills

Microsoft Word

Create, format, edit, and save professional documents such as letters, resumes, and reports.

Microsoft Excel

Learn basic spreadsheets, data entry, formatting, formulas, charts, and simple organization tools.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Create presentations using slides, images, text, themes, and basic presentation design.

Google Docs

Practice creating, editing, sharing, and organizing documents using Google’s cloud-based tools.

File Management

Organize files, folders, downloads, cloud documents, and shared work across different platforms.

Workplace Software Habits

Build confidence using digital tools for communication, organization, and workplace productivity.

Level 3: Information Literacy, Cybersecurity, and AI

Information Literacy

Learn how to search for information, evaluate sources, recognize misinformation, and use online content responsibly.

Your Digital Footprint

Understand how online activity, social media, accounts, posts, and shared information can affect personal and professional life.

Cybersecurity Basics

Learn basic online safety, password protection, phishing awareness, device security, and safe browsing habits.

Artificial Intelligence Basics

Northstar Digital Literacy

Measuring Skills and Building Confidence

Tec Centro Berks uses Northstar Digital Literacy resources to help students strengthen essential computer skills and track their progress. Northstar supports learning in areas such as Computer Basics, Internet Basics, Email Basics, Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and other important digital skills.

Students can use Northstar to better understand what they already know, identify what they need to improve, and continue building confidence with technology.

IBM SkillsBuild

Career-Focused Online Learning

Tec Centro Berks also uses IBM SkillsBuild to support digital learning and career readiness. IBM SkillsBuild provides online learning resources that help students explore technology, workplace skills, professional development, and career-connected training.

Students may use IBM SkillsBuild to continue learning beyond the classroom and prepare for future training opportunities in technology and IT support.

IT Support Specialist

Coming Soon in 2027: IT Support Specialist Pathway

Tec Centro Berks is planning to offer an IT Support Specialist training pathway in 2027. This future pathway will help students prepare for entry-level technology support roles and build the foundational knowledge needed for the CompTIA Tech+ certification.

This pathway incorporates IBM SkillsBuild learning areas that support IT readiness, including Information Technology Fundamentals, Introduction to IT, Cybersecurity Basics, Artificial Intelligence Foundations, Professional Skills, and customer service and workplace communication.

Certificate of Completion

Students who complete the Digital Literacy program will receive a certificate of completion from Tec Centro Berks. Students will also complete digital skills assessments or learning modules through Northstar Digital Literacy and IBM SkillsBuild.

Enrollment Requirements

Digital Literacy students will need to complete basic enrollment steps before beginning class and must posses the following:

Requirements:

Valid Picture ID

Completed enrollment paperwork

Placement or skill review, if needed

Meeting with a case worker to determine the right class level

A case worker will help students understand the full enrollment process.
